The Federal Foundation is tasked under public law with studying the causes, history, and impact of the dictatorship in the Soviet occupation zone and the GDR. It promotes research, public awareness, and the reappraisal of Communist regimes in East Germany and East Central Europe. The Foundation collaborates with museums, memorial sites, educational institutions, and victims’ associations to advance understanding and dialogue. Established in 1998 by the German Bundestag, it fosters partnerships across Europe to consolidate the process of reunification and address dictatorship legacies.

IDMC is dedicated to documenting and addressing the legacy of Albania’s communist dictatorship. It promotes awareness of the regime’s history, fosters democratic values, and encourages critical thinking. Through collaborations with schools, universities, and cultural organizations, IDMC delivers educational projects, multimedia content, and research to engage young people in reflecting on Albania’s past and advocating for democracy. Founded in November 2014, IDMC is a key institution for promoting historical memory and civic engagement in Albania.
