Born on May 13, 1969, in Durrës, Gjergj Hani attempted to cross the border via Lake Ohrid at the age of 16. The Durrës District Court sentenced him to 5 years in prison, which he served in the Qafë-Bari camp, despite being underage and in violation of the laws of the time.
He was released on January 13, 1986, under an amnesty marking the 40th anniversary of the communist republic. In July 1987, he was arrested again on charges of agitation, propaganda, and another escape attempt, receiving an 11-year sentence at the same camp.
Gjergj was finally released on February 6, 1991, after political changes in the country, having served a total of 4 years, 9 months, and 27 days in prison.
