Born in 1952 in Shkodër, Gjergj Livadhi is among the last individuals to be arrested for political reasons in Albania, in January 1990, shortly before the fall of the communist regime. His arrest occurred during an anti-communist protest in Shkodër and the attempt to topple the statue of Stalin on January 14, 1990. Notably, Stalin’s statue in Shkodër was the last to fall in Albania, long after his death in 1953, when his statues had already been removed in other communist countries of the Soviet Union and beyond. Accused by the State Security of being one of the organizers of the protest and convicted of “attempted diversion and agitation and propaganda against the state,” he was sentenced to 8 years of imprisonment on April 30, 1990. Gjergj served only 1 year, 2 months, and 13 days of his sentence and was released on March 29, 1991, from Reparti Nr. 305, Përparim.
